The Invention of Cars by Antieb Schinell http://www.fiacar.com Cars are a necessity, these days, because of the long distances people have to travel for their day-to-day affairs, such going to work, school or anywhere else. Most Americans own two or more cars. The story of how cars came into existence is very interesting, as you will see from the following summary. The French engineer Nicolas Joseph Cugnot was the one who invented the first self-propelled vehicle, powered by a steam engine, in 1769. It was a military tractor that was used by the French Army to transport artillery. But in 1770, the same man built a three-wheeled vehicle that weighted 4.5 tons and had wooden wheels and ironed tires. And what is more important, it could carry four passengers! Unfortunately, in 1771, the inventor of the vehicle himself had a car accident and the prototype was destroyed. However, some years later the English took up the idea again and, until 1840, built more than 40 vehicles and tractors, also powered by a steam engine. A German named Etienne Lenoir got the first internal-combustion engine patented in his name, in 1860. Six years later, a German Gottlieb Daimler built the first internal-combustion engine car. The weight of this vehicle's prototype was nearly two tons. And later, the same Daimler created another that weighed 90 pounds. Few years down the line saw Karl Benz designing the first three-wheeled automobile having an internal combustion engine. It was patented in 1886. The year 1893 marked the invention of the first four-wheeled automobile, again by Karl Benz. So, Benz was the first automobile industry. In the XIX century different industries emerged and started to build new and better things to improve the cars, like for example brakes, until in 1897, Rudolf Diesel designed the first self-ignition engine. Several years before, in 1833, Eilhard Mitscherlin had discovered petrol, what means that fuel was not a problem. This also means that liquid hydrocarbon was already available. It was a prolific period for the automobile. In the end of the XIX century, the young French Louis Renault built his first automobile in the garage of his parents' house. In 1892, the American Henry Ford built his own self-propelled, four wheeled vehicle. In 1903, Ford was able to establish his own company to build automobiles. And in 1908, Henry Ford achieved his dream of building an affordable and efficient automobile, the Ford T. And in 1913, this car achieved even more popularity when the costs of production were reduced as Henry Ford established a large factory at Highland Park with an assembly line. Between 1908 and 1928 Ford sold more than 15.000.000 Fort Ts! Other companies like Volkswagen, Porsche, Peugeot, Citroen and Ferrari and others came up with new models and parts. Thus, the journey of the car industry has been through many cars over many years to come up to the modern automobile we are familiar with. |
